This is an amazing demonstration for the behavior of sound, specifically standing waves. The unit consists of two ultrasonic transducers that emit sound waves and reflect them, creating a standing wave between the two. When a small piece of Styrofoam is placed in the standing wave, it levitates! A standing wave creates an alternating region of high and low pressure with nodes and antinodes. The Styrofoam levitates at the node in the standing wave.
