These small, disposable test strips are commonly, safely used in classrooms to demonstrate principles of genetics and inheritance- specifically to determine whether an individual has the genetic ability to taste PTC (phenylthiocarbamide), a bitter compound. Some people are able to taste PTC, while others cannot. When placed on the tongue, the PTC coated strip dissolves and releases the PTC compound, which interacts with the taste receptors in the mouth. If an individual is able to taste the PTC, they will experience a bitter taste, while those who cannot taste PTC will not notice any particular taste.
- Safe for all classrooms
- PTC (phenylthiocarbamide) only has a taste to 7 out of 10 people
- Perfect for a demonstration of genetics and heredity
- 30 micrograms of PTC on each strip – safe for taste testing
- Each strip measures 6mm x 48mm
- Each vial contains 100 test papers
